Are there any 6.5 (.264) children out there?

I have a 6.5 Grendel, but find that I have to back my loading down to around 2350 fps with a 123gr SST to achieve optimal accuracy. I'd be much happier with something in the 2700+ fps range. The much fatter 450 case would certainly provide added capacity, but is there a reason someone hasn't been down this road?

The bolt thrust would destroy a standard AR 15 bolt or BE. That's why the 30 Rem AR caliber uses an oversize bolt and BE. You could neck down 30 Rem AR brass and rebarrel one of its uppers with a 6.5 barrel. Would probably approach 260 Rem / 6.5 Creedmoor velocity but you would be limited to shorter bullets (120gr max) in order to get the cartridges to fit in an AR 15 magazine. Olympic Arms made a 25 WSSM that way and it was a real burner! You see a used one show up now and then on Gunbroker. They also made a 243 WSSM AR 15 that would kick a 70gr bullet out at 3650fps! That's a lot of bolt thrust.

I have a 6.5 Grendel with a 24" ER Shaw barrel on it. It liked throwing 123gr Amax bullets around 2600-2650fps for best accuracy.
Here's a 5-shot 100yd group:

You can try looking into the 6.5 Timberwolf from Mdws. Based on 308 case, gets best performance from Dasher brass. Uses an Oly 22-250 bolt and gets 3000fps with a 120gr ELD-M, out of 22" barrel. It will fit in a standard AR upper, so you won't have to track down a 30 RAR upper, then have custom work done. That'll be about the easiest way.

Drop to a 100G bullet and you will get closer to the 2700 mark.

But truthfully its just a number and the lil Grendel does just fine at about 2400 with good bullets!

I took my best deer to date with a 6.5 Grendel and a 120 Gold Dot bullet at almost 2600. (22" barrel seated very long in a Bolt gun) The deer was over 300# on the hoof and VERY long bugger! I could barely get his nose off the ground on my gambrel that tops out over 90" high.

I have used the old Sierra Pro Hunter 120 in my Sweede for many years and wanted them for the Grendel last year but none could be found for months!! I got some now and have worked up a good load with Benchmark but haven't chrono graphed it yet. Probably will be just shy of 2600.

That's exactly what I did and have found that a hot 100gr load shoots quite well in my Grendel. I'm actually getting about 2765 fps average using Nosler ballistic tips. I tried 120g Noslers and pushed at up to 2450 fps it's a bit erratic. For some reason, my barrel doesn't care for 120-123gr bullets unless I slow them down some.

Great shooting on both of ya'll targets. That looks like something my Bushmaster would do.
