Bead blasted, degrease in acetone, rinsed in distilled water, 90 seconds in 50% HCL (strong Muriatic Acid from Lowes), rinsed in distilled water, 5 minutes in Stainless steel blackener, rinse in distilled water and then 10 minutes in a 250 degree oven, then dip it in the sealer (while hot) and let dry. Use small glass jelly jars for the containers.

You can blacken it without bead blasting, but your prep must be diligent with a very good degreasing and 2 minutes in the muriatic acid

Inexpensive, bead blaster for light work:

Stainless steel blackener and sealer:

Make sure the brake is clean, do not touch it with your bare hands after degreasing, use the muriatic acid outside with goggles and gloves and do not touch the brake with your hands until it has dried in the oven and been dipped and dried with the sealer.

You may still have a slight mottled affect afterwards as SS is very hard to blacken. It doesn't bother me, as mine is a shooter and is going to be used for hunting.

Deer Hunting is my intent for my 450. Sounds like alot of work to blacken. I may go the bead balsting route. I just need to remove the sheen. I must say though that your blackened break looks great. I Just dont need the neighbors calling the cops cause they think im cooking meth or something! LOL

Here is the culmination of my .450 BM project. I started with the .450 16" Bushmaster upper when it was on sale at Midway. I shot about 20 factory loads and realized not only was I going to like this caliber, but I needed to reload and change a lot of parts on the gun. The lower is a Grizzly Multi-Cal lower (LAR) with an ACE stock, Ergo Grip, Mag-Pul trigger guard, Rock River trigger, Tac-Latch charging handle and Arredondo mag and bolt releases. I used a standard weight Carbine buffer with a custom +25% buffer spring. I put a Ross Comp on the barrel and a Carbon Arms Feather handguard. The gasblock is a Syrac adjustable. It is wearing a 1.5-6 Burris MTAC in a JP one piece mount. The rail on the side of the handguard is temporary for a laser until I get the system I am working on for a light and laser completed. I am running about half the gas volume with the factory loads and it functions sweet and smooth. The syrac's simple adjustment allows me to turn the gas up or down easily and it is very durable. Total weight is just over 8 pounds.

Well.. Not a machined out Cooley, but it's a bit "inspired" by it :-)
