250gr or 300gr Barnes MZ loads?

Postby Gutpile » Wed Dec 25, 2019 4:12 pm

Let's be honest, most 450 bushmaster game animals are shot at less than 225 yards.
Why not load the barnes MZ line?250 and 300 grain even the 225 grain xpb for pistols. Those bucketmouth copper mothers are itching for a on whitetail launch from an AR. I use these in a savage smokeless mz at similar velocity and they are devastating the long for weight, stiff copper should help with case volume fill and case tension too.
I cannot find where these were ever tested by anyone here

That Spit Fire MZ 245 grain looks like it might be awesome.
I've often considered loading up a pack and observing how it flies :|
The crimping might be an issue for reloaders?
Probably impressive results on whitetails from a 450 at long ranges, as noted by many hunters using Muzzle loaders.

I'd bet that Barnes is using the Spit Fire T-EZ or TMZ in their new for 2020 factory ammo :) If you have followed their instagram and or you-tube about Hog Hunting in Texass they use that snazzy blue tip.....

I can attest to the XPB200 performing flawlessly on whitetails.

I believe one or 2 members tried the TMZ's, and couldn't get them to group.
The muzzleloader bullets would probably work ok, if you can get them to group. One negative thing about them though, theres no driving bands. So no where to get a good crimp, and it will raise pressures compared to say the 275 TSX, 275 XPB, and the 200 XPB.

As to the 225 XPB, I wouldn't recommend it. It's made for pistol speeds, not rifle. So at a minimum, you will most likely see it shed it's petals. Maybe even at extnded ranges (for the 450B,anyway). At worst, it could spike pressures in the 450B, because it's probably made out of a softer alloy. On top of that, it has a horrible b.c. compared to the Barnes we typically run.

Looks like Barnes has released a 450bushy in 250g, one of the rounds highlighted at The Shot Show....

I just looked at the 250 TTSX and I'm kind of surprised. Its slightly longer, with a plastic tip, and boat tail. Looks like it should have the same or better B.C. than the 275 TSX, which is slightly shorter, flat based, and doesn't have a plastic tip. Yet, the 250 TTSX actually has a slightly lower B.C. Odd.

Not that it really matter's for this cartridge. You probably need a pretty long bullet for better B.C. and it couldn't be too heavy so it doesn't hurt velocity to make a real difference. Another thing to think about, the TTSX in some other calibers has been shown to not expand as fast, or as big as the TSX.
