Which upper should I get? (again)

Postby 07Kingpin » Sat Aug 15, 2020 5:32 am

I'm sure this gets asked from time to time, tried a search, sorry for the redundancy.

New to the 450, been working with it in a bolt action platform with pretty good results.

Also just picked up my first AR-15, an Anderson lower with a DPMS upper carbine in 223.

Considering an upper in 450, among others.

If needed I could change buffer tubes etc but would prefer to leave the lower alone and just have uppers in a couple of different cartridges.

Is this a realistic expectation, or is there just too much difference in say a 223 and 450 etc?

Looking to just plug and play as much as possible without building or major mods.

Will be using a scope.

What would be some uppers to look at?

What is a realistic price range?

Yes, you can use the same lower for both uppers. You may need to swap out the buffer for a heavier one with the 450, and a range test will confirm if you need to.

One upper I would NOT recommend is the Bushmaster brand 450 upper. I and several others on this forum have had major problems with them.

If you give us an idea of what kind of budget you are working with that may help with recommendations.

Thanks for the reply.

As to budget what would a reasonable range for a decent upper?

you can pick up an 16" or 18" BCA upper for around $350-$375 when they're in stock, depending on configuration (side charger, etc)

good buddy of mine hunts with the 18", and we've got another in the family as well that will be blooded this coming fall whitetail season. both shoot as good or better than my bushmaster 20" upper does.

Three companies that I would buy a 450 bushmaster upper from:
1. Franklin Armory out of Nevada/California.
2. Windham weaponry out of Windham Maine.
3. Black Hole barrels.

Two companies I would likely never buy a 450 bushmaster from would be:
1. Bear creek
2. Bushmaster/Remington (same sorry company.)

If executives from bear creek or bushmaster would like to change my mind, I am willing to negotiate to obtain their gear in exchange for a review on my YouTube channel.
