Ruger 450BM ?

Postby cwmoss » Sat Apr 11, 2020 2:27 pm

I just got my Ross Muzzle break in for my Ruger American 450 BM with a 22" bbl. Do I need to heat the factory radial muzzle break up a bit to break it free so I can install my Ross Break?

Not sure if Ruger uses a thread locker, but a lil heat isn't gonna hurt anything.

I've had to heat some factory muzzle brakes to get them loose. A couple left me wondering if the 800 lb gorilla was have a frustrating day when he installed them. Ditto on a few barrel nuts in AR rifles. You wouldn't know they have a torque spec! I think some low ball upper manufacturers don't want to spend a few extra dimes on shims to get the gas hole in their barrel nut to line up at rated torque so they just reef on them until the gas tube finally makes it through, but I digress. Heating a brake (within reason), as already said, wont harm anything.

The only issue you might encounter is if the barrel is painted with a non heat tolerant paint or hydro-dipped. I've gotten parkerized barrels hot enough to sizzle spit with no adverse affect.

I had the same problem removing the brake from mmy Ruger Gunsight . That jamnut just would not back away from the brake. I was going to use heat to help, but first I let it soak overnight with Kroil. Next day as I was getting the torch ready first tried the tools and behold that nut spun back. I didn't notice any thread locker. KROIL again rescue LOL.

Broke it loose. I first tried at room temp, wouldn't budge, then applied some heat, and it broke loose easily. Didn't hurt the finish at all. It doesn't show that there was any thread locked on it.
Thanks

Curious to hear if you see any difference between the two brakes.

I've used Ross's brakes on just about everything with great results.

I have a Savage 10 with one of those large gill brakes and a crush washer.....it took heat because they used blue Loctite didn't make sense with a crush washer....had to use oak barrels block in a vise and a wrench with a 1' braker bar extension.....now need to figure out how to get the crush washer off without harming the threads....

I got my Ross brake earlier in the week, but just got to go out yesterday and shoot the rifle. A friend had his 16.5" Ruger 450 out, so he shot his, then shot my 22" 450 Ruger. He said there was a difference. Another friend was there shooting a 243 and after he shot my rifle, said it kicked less than the 243. Think I'll be getting another one for my 308 AR.

I put a Ross brake on my Ruger American and it made all the difference in the world. it tamed it down so its less than a 243.
