Picked up a box of 250 grain FTX and a pound of Lil Gun yesterday. A friend also cast me some 275 grain SWC-HPs with gas check and poly coat to try. Going to see how they do tomorrow sans the FH.

Good advice "Hoot". I'll give that a try before I consider cutting the flash hider down to thread protector size. By turn you mean one full 360 turn, correct?

Yes but with that "Izzy" brake which I also agree is more like a flash hider, it wont matter which side is up. I like to tinker with things so I enjoyed varying the brake on mine to find the tune. Like I said, the down side is burning through ammo to find it. The shooting part is its own reward. ;)

Great thread.

Unlike Hoot my hearing is far from perfect, more years than I care to admit in power plants, generator bldgs etc has taken it's toll.

I don't like getting kicked in the shoulder but have to be pretty careful about increased reports anymore.

Same here. 18 months participating in the "Southeast Asia War Games" didn't do my hearing any good between gunfire, explosions and the whine of jet engines, loud noise took its toll. I retired from the Air Force in 1985 with a high frequency hearing loss. The hearing loss slowly got worse over the years until I finally realized I needed hearing aids in 2009 and have been wearing them ever since. Hearing loss is really the least of my problems. Emphysema and cancer is a bigger problem now.

First of all a 450 is just a 20 Ga. as far as recoil, do you really need a brake?

Since I have hunted with electric ear muffs for over 20 years, I don't mind the noise. Less recoil = fast follow up shots. Should you ever shoot a tree with your first shot! :D

I have a cheap Tanker style brake, made for a .308, so I had to bore them out. [3 rifles and a pistol] ;) ;) ;)

Turns out my barrel is threaded 5/8X24. Found a thread protector on line for a reasonable price. So far, 250 gr FTX and 300 grain XTP-MAGs are shooting great in my bushmaster build. 1.6" at 150 yards with the 300 grain Hornady and 1905 fps. FTX is doing 1.055" at 100 yards at 2236 fps With the rifle sight for the FTX at 100 yards, the Hornady 300 gr pills are dead on at 150 yards with FTX zero. The FTX pills are feeding fine from my modified Axis 243 mag but the 300 grain won't feed worth a hoot. Good to be back on line, just got my replacement laptop in today after waiting two weeks for Dell to send it.
