Mauser 98 450 BM new build

I started with the 450 BM in a Ruger 77 Scout and a S&B 8 x 56 scope for hunting hogs in the evening. Perfect night rifle for hogs. This worked ok in the daytime for deer but close distances in the brush not optimum. I went to a backup daytime scope QD rings. A Swarovski Z6 1 x 6 with the circle dot reticle which is perfect for daylight brush hunting, snapshots, and running game. Swapping scope worked OK, but a PITA.

I have a lot of spare Mauser actions and parts and decided to build a 450 BM on a Mauser 98 action. Used an easy to install Rhineland Arms barrel, a cheap Hogue stock, but had issues getting it to feed reliably.

Years ago had bought a number of those Gibbs style detachable Mauser 98 magazines for the 8x7 Mauser and 30 06 cartridges that failed to work on any of a number of rifles I tried them on. I had them in a junk box and decided to try them with the 450 Bushmaster and stock military-style bottom metal. They work perfect. Zero issue. I was surprised.

All I did was screw the barrel on, headspace it, and tighten the barrel ring, screwed it into the factory Hogue stock with no glass bedding, and took it out to see how it grouped. I was hoping for 3" at 100 yards, got one ragged hole instead. Shoots just as good as my Ruger Scout in 450 BM both with factory load HDY 250 FTX's.

The target has a 3 shot group at 100 yards even though it looks like 2 shots.

Shot the first deer with it this weekend.

I like this new rifle much better than the Ruger and all I had to buy was the barrel, had all the other parts laying around.

Nice build and nice group. That 18" barrel looks stubby in that full size stock but you sure can't fault the performance. Glad it worked out so well for you.

Excellent accuracy and a good lookin rifle. I have a 16" Rhineland barrel on my Savage Axis and it shoots the 250 grain FTX and 300 grain Mag and 400 grain Speer bullets sub MOA at 100 yards. The Speers were originally .458" bullets I resized to .452".

GaCop, I would love to hear more about those Speer 400's and the load you are using.
