Leupold is not a dicey bet. Leupold is hard to beat for the price. I have as many Leupold as I do Redfield and no failures. I shoot big heavy calibers and loads and have had zero failures. Don't be misguided, most have no issues with Leupold. I don't know why some people have things break and most others have excellent results. Overwhelmingly positive results. Leupold is good stuff. Don't buy cheap and reduce your chances of failure. Cheap will fail...

This article would tend to agree with you. Don’t flinch about spending as much on a scope as you do on the rifle. With the RAR, that is a very real possibility. A lot of folks seem to talk Poo about putting good optics on a short bullet. But others seem to believe this 450BM caliber is capable of some good accuracy out past 100 yards…

I would suggest a midrange priced Vortex. I just bought a Vortex for $99 at Midway USA. They are also running sales on optics right now. But if you can find a Nikko Stirling. That would be outstanding.
Yes. That’s right. I’m using a Nikko Stirling on my 450 Bushmaster AR 20” and I’ve been running it ever since I bought it. You can see it in all my videos. You can see the results in my range tests. Trouble is, like Nikon and red field, I think they’ve gone out of business or they’re just not being imported to the United States anymore.

How far out can I reliably aim with a red dot?

Put a flip to side 3x magnifier behind it and you can reach out as far as the bullet will fly.

thats also gonna depend on how big the red dot is

if its got a 12 MOA dot, at 200 yds your aiming point is gonna be 24" across.

if you get a sight with a 2 moa dot... at the same distance your aiming point is gonna be 4"

just somethign to consider.

There is such a thing? I don't know why anyone would have larger than a 2 moa dot on a rifle, and the target magnifies equally so shouldn't be an issue.

In the Vortex line, there appears to be a model that specializes in straight-walled cartridges like the 450BM. Price not bad either, at $169.

https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/vortex- ... ifle-scope

Do these hold up? Is it ludicrous to put a 50mm, 1.1lb scope on a 7.5 pound rifle with a 16inch barrel.

Either way, what kind of mounting rings should I be looking for?

I’m using Burris PEPR mount one piece permanent type. But in the 30mm.

UPDATE: On order is a Vortex CROSSFIRE® II 3-9X50 STRAIGHT-WALL BDC. $169 at Cabelas (and pretty much everywhere). The idea of having bullet drop markings matched for my round seemed like a deal too good to pass up. And this combo (with a smaller objective) came recommended at the end of this article. Though for the 450BM. I imagine this scope will be living at the lower end of the magnification range.

I went with two different height scope rings because I couldn’t tell from reviews. Though the product photo featuring my exact RAR (minus the camo) sure does seem to say I’ll need the extra height of the medium rings.

Can someone please explain how the vortex bdc reticle works? I’m a Nikon bdc guy and I use the spot on app to enter my velocity, bc, bullet weight and the app does the calculations and gives me the yardages of the dots on the reticle. Extremely accurate out to 300yds in my experience. How does the vortex bdc do this for all straight wall cartridges that vary in the above mentioned data? And don’t tell me “magic” we are not in Dallas. Thx, Bubba

I was wondering the same thing. Do they assume typical factory loads? Does the shape of the bullet in straight walled cartridges , and it’s reduced aerodynamics, make a bigger impact on bullet drop than differences in bullet grain etc? Or are those differences already baked in when you zero at 100 yards, so whatever gets you on the paper at 100 yards will drop at the same rate at 150y, 200y, 250y regardless of how the cartridge was loaded?

I know nothing.

Here’s one piece of great news. According to this Vortex Video, they used the 450BM caliber as their ballistic profile for the scope.

Of course, this probably assumes factory loads so reloads with different ballistics would be out of luck. But still, a pretty good development.
