I haven’t seen any actual chrono numbers for a 10.5”. I’ve seen some numbers for 12-13” barrels that put Hornady 250gr factory ammo at around 100-150fps less than a 16”. So maybe 1950-2000fps area. I found chrono numbers for Windhams 9” barrel with Hornady’s 250gr ammo, which is 1730fps.

So my guess is going to be somewhere around 1850fps for a 10.5” barrel, using Hornady 250gr factory ammo. If you reload, you will probably gain a little more.

Thanks for the info. I need to find some reload data for a good deer hunting load also.

Whatever your choice of bullet for deer hunting with a 10.5" barrel, you definitely want to stay with powders equal to or faster than Lil Gun or you'll be spitting out a lot of unburned powder. That is, assumnig you're not looking for a subsonic load due to running a can on that 10.5. I have zero experience with subsonic loads.

In a 10.5, consider running Alliant 2400 powder and a Barnes 200gr XPB or Hornady 200gr FTX if you're going for supersonic.

With the reduced velocity, I would recommend the 275 TSX, Makers 250gr, or Makers 275gr. I know those are a little heavy and they will be running a little slow, but the 275 TSX has a minimum velocity of 1200fps, and from what I can see, the Makers are rated at around 2000fps max. I would start load work up for all of them off Hodgdons data for the 275 TSX.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering about the pistol powder being good in the short barrel. I will try the 200 and 250/275 grain. Probably wont work a load up for this season with work schedule and season already underway but will in the future. Thanks again, great info.

Given the age of this thread, I’m wondering about any new developments. So, I have my AR that filled several tags for me and last year I added a Ruger American and it put venison in the freezer very efficiently. But it seems that pistols, including AR, are legal in the late season. Just one more chance to stay in the woods, put more venison in the freezer.

Getting the itch to build. Thinking a 10.5” Bushy, but open to suggestions.

So, where are we at with this? Can I still use Hornady Black, or is there a better hand load option? Are the loads above still a good starting point?
