Finally made it to the range to test the 405 grain loads. To keep it short, I'll list the best performing charge(s) of Unique. 2nd Best was 10.6 grains. Velocity was 1053 fps, SD-6, ES-11, ME: 997 ft./lbs. 3 shot group at 75 yards was 1.411". Not sure what a max charge is with the Unique so I will slowly increase charges until I see signs of excess pressure. Absolute best was 11 grains yielding 1077 fps, SD-5, ES-9, ME: 1043 ft./lbs., 3 shot group at 75 yds was 1.193". Range temp was 73 degrees with humidity at 86%. I definitely need to resize a bunch of these bullets to .452"! Recoil is very mild.

Maybe I missed it, but are you running gas checks?

No, these are plain base bullets from Missouri Bullets. I'm not getting any leading at all. Barrel after shooting looks like it's never been shot and no soot on the cases. Re tried these loads yesterday using tissue paper as a filler to hold the powder against the primer flash hole. SD and ES increased a bit and accuracy wasn't as good as the initial loads. I also tested charges up to 11.4 grains and still no signs of pressure problems. I think I can safely go up to 12 or 12.5 grains of Unique.

I also tried a 273 grain gas check poly coated hollow point a friend casts. I used the same Unique powder charges and, of course, velocities were higher in the 1150 to 1255 fps range and accuracy was very good at 75 yards (1.2"). Muzzle energy was 980 to 997 ft./lb. range. Recoil was very mild, like shooting an M-1 carbine.

Ordered a Lee .452 sizer that came in yesterday. I already had some of the 405 grain pills that my friend ran thru his .454 sizer so I resized all 138 down to .452 and will resume heavy bullet testing this weekend (weather permitting).

Haha. Good information!

How was recoil?

I have aome 450's that dropped from the mold too small for the .459 die I use for the 45/70. Rather then toss them back in the pot I loaded them with a full chg (bottom Of bullet) of Trail Boss.
