250 Hornady XTP bullet (muzzleloader, next the 450)

Postby teamja2 » Sun Dec 04, 2011 8:54 pm

I'm more than impressed with the 45 caliber 250gn Hornady XTP based on this years hunting season and may consider using it in the 450. Both my father in law and I took full size northern missouri does with this bullet this year, his was a midrange load of 777 (doe taken at 80 yards or so) and my load was a max load of Blackhorn 209 with the xtp (doe at 35 yards quartering). I have yet to chronograph these loads but the max load of bh209 may approach 450 velocities.

Both bullets recovered on offside hide with good mushrooming.

Here is my recovered bullet - weight 238.4gns, .867" max measured diameter.

That's good weight retention!

Those look great, I'd definitely be interested in finding out how fast you are shooting them. Do you have a chronograph to check the velocities?

I thought I remember reading somewhere that those XTP (non mag versions) have a tendancy to NOT expand at higher velocities from the 450B..

I know I got a doe last yr with my muzzle loader (90 gr of BlackMag powder) with a 250gr XTP at about 50 yds. It went thru her and left no blood anywhere near where she was hit or even a blood trail. BUT when I found her piled up 100 yds away she finally bled out a LOT..

BUT i stand to be corrected
