light loads with the 230 gr bullet

Hi Everyone
I just aquired a 450 bushmaster upper and installed it on my Stag arms lower. Being as I'm from Canada, land of the opressed, there are limited locations I can legally shoot this rifle. I do the majority of my shooting at an indoor 25 meter range and the plate can't take centerfire rifle hits. So my question is there a load available to shoot 230 gr fmj bullets at or around 1700 fps,I know this sounds weak but it's still enjoyable for me .

Welcome to the campfire. I don't think the 230 FMJs are going to be very friendly to any steel plate up to 1/2" unless you can get them below 1600FPS. Here, let me show you.
This is video one. Here, I am just playing around at 75 yards when on the thrid shot, I try for a 1/4" steel plate at 75 yards.

After that, I started testing steel plates with the 450 Bushmaster. The videos are all on my channel. I started testing on what I thought was a 3/8" steel plate with factory and custom reloaded FMJs. Come to find out the plate is actually
7/16" steel plate. I am currently working on more loads for more videos, but as you can see, the FMJ is pretty brutal on steel plates. But I bet somebody here can fix you up somehow. Maybe Gas Checked Lead Solids?

It cycled my clean, wet action down to 24gr actually. YMMV. The 28gr load drove a 200gr XPB in my water jug tests thread to 1837 fps, so I figure it would drive a 230gr FMJ a little slower.

The two rounds I shot at that velocity 15 feet from the water jugs shot less than .25 MOA.

If you read the thread, it was testing expansion of the .451 Barnes 200gr XPB bullets simulating their velocity at different distances using reduced loads consistent with predicted velocities from a ballistics calculator. It was not an accuracy test for reduced velocity loads. It's a good thread if you ever consider hunting with the 200gr Barnes XPB. At full power, they shot sub MOA at 100 yards with an MV of 2400 fps, yielding an ME of 2550 ft/lbs. This was not an overly hot load. Just a good choice for a deer load that didn't leave the meat filled with lead pieces. We do a lot of experimenting on this forum

Luck be a lady, I took it out this season and only saw a few 70lb yearlings which I chose to let live and grow to maturity. So, no live results to report. Hopefully next year...

Hey Guys
Thanks very much for the replies I know what grits are but don't believe I've ever seen tem in the market, would corn meal be close? Also the plate at the range is armour plate (blems from tank plate I think) We once shot it with a 458 win mag, 500 gr factory loads, dented it but did not penetrate. My 454 casull with hot 300 gr handloads did not damage it.
