250GRN DPX

Postby alaskabushmaster » Tue Mar 27, 2012 11:23 pm

38 GRNS LIL GUN, 250 GRN BARNES DPX, HORNADY BRASS, TAPER CRIMP, WINCHESTER SMALL RFL

This load is lethal on big game, so far 2 brown bears, 3 black bears, and a moose to the bushmasters credit. They all dropped with one shot except the small brown. She took two FTX factory loads but in reality wasn't going anywhere. The first shot broke both shoulders and spine but got more bone than lung/heart and a second shot did the trick. I was on the old cal guns thread under another name. I glad to see this site is still going. Its a shame federal isnt making loads for us yet but loading is more fun anyway. This load had shot end to end on a big black bear. In the chest and out the right ham. Penetration and chest cavity devastation are impressive. Entrance wound is big enough to put a fist through. The petal do break of after entering the chest cavity sometimes. In reality though the petals do a good bit of damage. I found one stuck in a vertebra. The moose went down with one shot just in front of the right rear ham high just under the spine. It was the only kill shot I had. It broke the spine and severed both femorals. The 54in bull bled out in under 30 seconds. 137 yards 24inches penetration give or take.

What part of Alaska do you live in? I grew up in Palmer and Fairbanks. Nice bears.

I do have pics of the moose but ill have to dig in my old phone I believe. Give me 24 hours and I should have them posted. My cabin is between talkeetna and willow and that's the area I hunt. Everyshot was a pass through except the ftx and there was nothing left but jacket fragments. As for velocity the average is about 2100 with a spread of about 60 GPS in 20 rounds. Do any of the rest of you use this load? Velocity drops fast at range it seems with it but darn those dpx can do some damage at 2100fps. I do have a pic of the petal in a vertabre though. Ill dig for them.

I started out with 38 grains on my 230 grain FMJs and worked up to 43 grains so far. I was using WSR primers. My FPS we hovering between 2400-2500 with the charges between 39-43 grains but I have yet to find a sweet spot. But man, you should see the expansion of that MagTek FMJ in milk jugs! Wow.

Welcome and congratulations on some nice animals! Good to know the Thumper does such a good job on bears as I'm hoping to be able to afford a Maine bear hunt this Fall.
