Plugging 2.30 COL into QL, it models spot on with your velocity and the estimated chamber pressure is such that I wouldn't hesitate to run that even in my AR platform. As a matter of fact, I've run the 275 XPB hotter in my 20" Bushmaster with no ill effect.

To summarize, that's a good safe load for your Ruger American. If you're happy with it, go with it. Image

For the record, you could get about 100fps more velocity for the same chamber pressure using 40gr of Lil Gun.

I say load it out to about 2.33-2.34, that's around the point you can crimp into the driving band. Plus you can load a little more powder.

As Hoot pointed out, shouldn't be a problem for the Ruger American to handle that.

just curious, how high would the pressures be with 41 or 42 grains of h110 staying with the 2.3 col and the 275 tsx bullet? Would like to get to 2,200 fps, but have heard bad things about lil gun regarding temp sensitivity etc. Never used it in my 458 socom or handuns. Pretty much stayed with unique, 2400, and h110. Just an old fart I guess

Lil Gun isn't a concern in this straight wall caliber as long as you don't work up loads when its 50 degrees out and then shoot it when ts 100 degrees without adjusting the charge down but that's the case for most, if not all ball powders'

41gr of H110 bumps the chamber pressure up to 45.6k and 42 gr up to 49k in theory".

If you want to go higher, take Bmt85's advice and seat the bullet a little longer. That'll buy you back about 3k pressure reduction. Can't believe you're not applying any crimp. I assume you dial the seating die up a little (per instructions) so as not to apply a roll crimp. Basically run the ram up, screw the seating die until it bottoms out against the shell holder and back the die off a turn before locking it down. Then apply a taper crimp down into the driving band groove. The importance of a strong crimp goes down as the bullet weight goes up. It is however, critical with lighter bullets which get moving a lot easier.

loaded up a few 275 tsx barnes to 42 gr of h110 with a light crimp in the front driving band. Primers looked good and there was no soot on the case. Chrono was 2,230. Does that sound ok in a Ruger american bolt action? That is as far as I am going. Kicks a little

To me, that sounds perfect but I'm not chasing every last fps out of it. Plenty lethal at that velocity. Look forward to reading your hunting results. Remember to take pictures down to the nitty gritty. We love them.

You should be fine with that. The 275 TSX has a minimum expansion velocity of 1200 fps, so you don't need to get crazy with it.

Hello guys,
I recently went to the range with my RAR 450 with Barnes 275 grain and had let’s then favorable results between the charge weight of 35.0 -37.0 grain of lil’gun. Target looks like I was using a scatter gun and definitely not a bolt action. All rounds were loaded to C.O.A.L 2.333” with a taper crimp. In quickload version 3.9 they added the 275 TSX bullet, but overall length is incorrect it’s two short. Now my question is how are you guys loading 40+ grains of lil”gun at C.O.A.L 2.333” plus a a crimp and not getting over pressure signs? Quickload predicts it to be way to hot. When I got to 37.0 grains the primers were flat, I had ejector swipes, and heavy bolt lift. So I obviously stopped. I checked the case head expansion and the highest I had was .00015” once fired factory ammo brass. Im looking to go back to the bench but I need to make some corrections here. Has anybody experienced this? Should I make a bullet seating depth change? I see some members like 2.410” that’s almost a .080 jump from were I was. Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you all!
