Max OAL in RAR Bolt guns

Postby Decoy Defender » Tue Oct 22, 2019 6:10 pm

Of course every gun will be a little different but was wondering what the over all consensus was on max OAL that you found for your gun. I’m not set up just yet for reloading so I can’t do the testing. My father is the family’s reloader but that’s about to change. And also, have you found it better or worse to load closer to the lands?

A 275gr Barnes touches the lands in my guns at around 2.465ish. I seat them 2.410ish.

Barnes Technician told me that Barnes bullet like a "little jump" to the lands. They recommend 0.05-0.070 jump. When I measured my distance to lands on my Ruger No.1, Gunsite Scout, and Hawkeye 450s, all measure between 2.465-2.470". Like Al I load the rounds to 2.410" That is using the
275 XPB.

found a couple of other notes this morning on OAL in my 16" Bushey barrel. I'll double check with my bolt gun and #1 when I get a chance.

The 450 has a very generous .200 of freebore according to SAAMI specs, allows some bullets to be seated farther out like the 275gr Barnes for some added case capacity ;)

300gr XTP mag 2.220 to the lands

250gr FTX was 2.460 to the lands (not much bullet in case)

300gr Speer deep curl 2.225 to the lands
