Has anyone chrono'd loads with the 260 Platinum tips? Just picked up a few hundred for a great price and looking for data. Winchester lists these bullets in 454 Casull at 1800 fps so they should work perfect for the bush.

Hello everyone.

New member and first post. I want to thank everyone for their information as I've recently started reloading.

I first started using these platinum tips in a muzzleloader about 15 years ago. They were the most accurate and most lethal saboted slug that I used and also used them in my 12 gauge. Then Winchester stopped production of both leaving me searching for something close. The 12 gauge line switched to a "dual bond" that resembles the platinum tip but my H&R doesn't shoot them as accurately. I have found some on GB and will be buying some and working up some loads. If my CVA 450 likes them I'll share this with the group.

Hi again everyone.

So I got 600 of these to use in my 450 and my muzzleloader. I finally had some time to work up some loads and give them a flight downrange. Using h110 I was able to limit them out at 2400 fps but it's not for the faint of heart... my starting loads produced just over 2200 fps. Accuracy was pretty decent on both at 50 yards but I was more after the velocity over the chronograph than I was trying to really sight in the round.

Let me know if you want any of the specs I used, I plan to find the sweet spot for accuracy then work up loads for the fall whitetail season.

I apologize that it's been a year and I'm just now getting back to you guys... it's been a long process with these loads and other loads... the AR is ... well... my CVA actually kicks less than this monster. I haven't been able to group very well with a handful of different trials. I'm using h110 powder and I have found that a deep seating depth is giving me the best results on all types of loads. Those include:
225 gr ftx
245 gr interlock
240 gr xtp
260 gr platinum tip

The xtp and 225 ftx group extremely well, but they both have their flaws in my personal experience and research. For me, the xtp's shot from muzzleloaders in the past have been very accurate but lack expansion and lead to long tracking. The 225 ftx has a reputation for grenading on impact.

Going back to COAL, when I say short, I'm loading the platinum tips down 2.10 for the most consistent groups and SD on the chronograph. I hope this helps. I just made up some more loads tonight so I hope to have a report in the next 2 weeks... I promise this time it won't take a year LOL

That is likely due to the fact the the 240 is an XTP-MAG, which has the jacket rolled into the HP and makes them tougher than hell. Try the 250 XTP if you want expansion.

Thank you for that information, as long as I've shot them, I never knew that.
