New to the forum but been reading lots. Reloaded for 20+ yrs. Very familiar with 45acp and how taper crimp and headspace on case mouth works. Just got hor dies and 250grn ftx boolits. I have a BCA 18" upper I have been hunting Buckeye state whitetails for 4 seasons now and have taken bambi from 212,225,244 &268yds with factory 250grn blk ammo. The accuracy is sub moa at 100yds but the ammo has went from $25 a box to over $60 in my area. It's time to reload. I have 7lbs of old 296 metal can I would like to use. LG is non existent right now without traveling 1.5hrs. My 9yh edition book says 296 can get the required 2200fps I need to match up with my nikon bdc scope. 40.4grn is max load at 2200fps. I plan to work up to this with my chrono watching for pressure signs. Does this sound like a good plan? Thx, Bubba

Welcome Aboard Bubba!

I'm strictly a 20" AR user but from what I've seen, an 18" should get close to 2200 at the top of its safe range with 296. I know mine does easily with Lil Gun and 296 isn't far behind. Given the provenance of your 296, I'd start out at 38gr and work up from there in half grain steps, with an eye on the chrony. I'm sure with your years of experience, you already know that the best load isn't always the hottest that you can attain without pressure signs. Did you ever chrony the factory ammo, to see what your 18" does with it? I do recommend magnum primers like the Rem 7 1/2 or CCI 450.

Good Luck finding your sweet spot.

It's time to roll your own and enjoy the benefits of personal satisfaction and accuracy. Have at it. You'll be glad you did. Don't bell the necks of your cases, ream them and seat bullets carefully, slowly to retain neck tension. Enjoy!

I did chrono the hor blk at an average 2288fps. That combined with the nikon glass with bdc creates perfect down range performance using the spot on app. It's almost like cheatin!

Well, Just ordered a 450 bbl for an old savage axis I had laying around. Looks like those hornady dies will get a workout!

same as any calculator ..... GIGO - garbage in, garbage out!

feed it the most accurate data you can and it'll pay you dividends!

pay attention to the little stuff too - plug those temps in that you recorded your chrono data on, make sure your scope height over bore is as close as possible, things like that.

also - back up your data to one of their recomended data storage solutions. it does NOT transfer data if you update to a new device, etc. which is a real pain if you forget about it and suddenly all your guns and load data evaporate on you :/

Did some handle pullin today. Made a few variants made 5 of each.
250 xtp’s, mag primers, 38grn win 296
250 xtp’s, mag primers, 38.5 grn. Win 296
250xtp’s, mag primers, 39grn Win 296

250ftx’s, mag primers, 41.4 Win 296 (hor book shows this 2200fps) trying to duplicate hor black.

I will take these to the range with some hor black factory to shoot all over crony and look for pressure signs.

My Ross brake should b here mid week for the axis build. Getting pretty excited...
