Hornady 230gr fmj rn+45gr lilgun=hard hits!!!

Postby dale » Mon Aug 15, 2011 9:47 pm

Went out after work today with the latest batch of reloads. At 45 gr lilgun, 2.115 oal, there's still space in the cartridge, no violent recoil, and considerably less bolt face imprinting than the last batch @ 41gr. The stouter load must stick the brass to the chamber better for less rearward thrust?? Almost no sooting. The action fed flawlessly from my unmodified sig mag, with a nice tight pile of brass. I used the modified fcd with slightly narrowed crimping lips, then taper crimped to remove the slight bell from the expander and fcd crimp. I'd have some chrony numbers for you guys but.............. .....took out the chrono on the first shot with a low blow fmj. Dont ask how or why, i'll do better in the future, i promise
I did however get some good pics, and the 3/8 plate is totally busted!!!
fmjs punched holes in 3/8x6 flat bar from about 50 yards, holes mic around .700, more expansion than expected.
This is one mean load, but do your own research, be responsible, beware, this is my experience, but yours could be different.
thanks

Cool! Excellent pics.

I know what I'm going to start listing on the "Marketplace" part of this site: New chronys, and chrony repair service!

Typical penetration results, really opens your eyes.

The Chrony Manufacturer, will usually give a great deal for a new rig, if you explane what happened..

according to the geka punch chart at work, it takes 48,600 pounds of force to punch 11/16" hole through 3/8" A36 mild steel. Close to a 10 wheeler with a decent load. Like getting hit by a truck...

These were hornady 230gr fmj's, wsr primers, manually weighed each charge. 45gr lilgun. Brass was once fired factory loads.
overall length was 2.115
I looked for awhile and never found the steel pieces or the bullets. i did find one that failed to punch 1/2" plate. looked like a small lead cup with no jacket to be found.
next to try the hornady 230gr fmj fp's out.

Thanx Dale. I'm still looking for some Hornady 230 FMJ FPs. But my local Cabelas has the Hornady 230 FMJ RNs in stock.
