Couple of things, first Hoot has an interesting concern. In the past I have annealed a std 284 sizer die, then drilling and reaming the top of the die makes the perfect jig for keeping everything hot-straight-and-normal. But, here's something to consider, if your going to buy a reamer, call my buddy Dave at Loon Lake Reamers, the builders of all my reamers, and the reamers for Bushy's 450, and have a reamer made to freshen the chamber. Now, you'd only want to freshen enough so that you can chamber, cut 284 cases with a 458 bullet installed in the case, but still be able to head space off the mouth of the std 450 factory case. This is something I have done for many long years and the advantage is many strong. First, I don't have to ream. Second, the LeGendre Side Crimp takes care of any concerns of the case not sealing because the necks are thick. And Third, and this is the BIGGIE, But as they say this suggestion is for the extreme expert, not to be done by anyone not completely familiar with the DANGERS. I don't Draw down/Swage my 458 bullets. I adjust the loads, for the negligible increase in pressures and LET THE 452 BARREL DO THE DRAWING!! To tell you the truth, I can't see any increase in pressures. But until I get my pressure equipment up and running there is no real reliable way to quantify this, but, just adjust the powder load amount down, bringing up the amount until YOU feel enough is still SAFE.
My thought is this, you can ream ALL your cases or you can ream the chamber, once. I'd like to take credit for all this, Drawing stuff, but in truth, P.O. Ackley himself gave me this suggestion, I have used these methods of drawing bullets since I was a kid and this summer, the schedule calls for this to be proven out, in my Labs (that is Barrel Drawing the 458 to 452), but until then, consider the above suggestion DANGEROUS.
I however have even drawn solids in this fashion with no ill effects, but then again, I know what I'm doing. There are many here that know too, so for them, and only them, Go-For-It..t
