Picked up this #4 mk II Lee Enfield yesterday. By its serial number, it appears to have been manufactured in 1954 or 1955. It’s unissued/unfired, and doesn’t have a single scratch or blemish- pretty much a new 60+ year old rifle. Image Image

Very nice! That is a very fine rifle!
I always kind of wanted an Enfield, just never got one.

You can tell by my name that I have an attraction to them. It’s the slickest Enfield bolt rifle I’ve ever seen.

There's no way to say this without sounding petty. I've never liked cock on close rifles. I like feeling how the cartridge feels as the bolt cams it into place. To me, the cocking action distracts me as I'm doing that. I once had an Ishapur carbine, converted to .308, back when I was into 7.62 rifles. Don't remember whether I sold or traded it but the main reason was the cock on close. Still have the FR8 which is a Mauser action.

In Theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In Practice, there is.

It’s not my favorite action either, although I’ve hunted with a sporterized #4 mk1 successfully for many years. I got used to the cock on closing, but it still feels weird if I don’t shoot it for a while.

Didn’t buy it to shoot though, as the value of these unfired is rising fairly fast (already turned down $800). It’s a beautiful rifle IMHO, and a well preserved piece of history.
