you dont have to be the killjoy... if they really did just go there... and thats not a typo - winchester has fully taken the killjoy title for you.
and they probably just sunk the damn cartridge, at least from wide embracing acceptance right out of the box.
had they used a 223 based rim/case dimension without the necking - that would have all but guaranteed it to be a winner long term, because simply speaking reloaders would have been ALLLLLLL over it because of the availability of brass and of course bullets. lets face it - thats one of the reasons the 300 blk has been such a success... most common rifle brass on the planet aside from x39, massive bullet selection in 30 caliber, and uses common magnum pistol powders. the magic word across the board being - common, common, common!
if they went and did a rebated rim - instead of just going with a simple rimless design like the 223 is - it would seem that they're just being greedy at that point and want to control brass production for the first couple years by doing something totally proprietary. which is silly since they went and saami'ed it right away. but i'm no engineer so maybe, somewhere theres a logical reason for what they did. or we can hope at least.
we'll have to wait for the SAAMI drawings to be released to find out what we're working with and see if that "rebated" part is a typo, or if we're talking like a thousandhts or two and a 223 case will work, etc.
sure shot the idea of an early addition to my collection right in the @$$ though :/
