Federal 230gr HST projectile starting point

Postby Greymatter » Wed Aug 21, 2019 8:27 am

:?: I recently picked up 2x bags of 250count bulk packed 230gr HST projectiles at a private gun show. I've tried researching the forum and internet of anyone trying to load this type of projectile in any cartridge capable of +1800fps with no luck. I only have $.05 a piece invested, so if it isn't possible I'll load them in the 45acp. Ultimately they would be run in a gas gun. What powders would want to start with?

Good find, I wish I could run across them like that!!!

If it were me, I'd start 35-35gr Lilgun and work up from there.

Thank you for the quick reply. I wonder if the projectile will hold up at those velocities or confetti into the target. I'm sure it will work as intended at 800-1200fps impact velocity. This may turnout to be a devastating 100-150yrd deer load. I'm going to try my best to make this work. With all the new .45 caliber duty projectiles on the market this research may be extremely useful.

I have shot that bullet @ 1250fps into milk jugs from a 45 Super and it looked like all the other pictures you see of them, I don't see 1500fps at impact being a issue on deer.

Thank you very much for your observation. That's inspiring news to say the least. If it exhibits the same behavior throughout these higher velocities, it should be one hell of a round.

i would be very careful as you warm up the velocity of that bullet. depending on its makeup as you approach 450 bushmaster pressures, it might do unexpected things, even possibly while still in the barrel.

being thats its soft enough of an alloy to expand down below 900 fps, it could well have some base deformation while in the barrel and cause a pressure spike.

this is much akin to hornady's warning about using the non-mag XTP's in the 450.

im not suggesting that it will be unsafe, just that it might be and care needs to be taken when exploring the limits of a projectile under pressure

I agree with you 100%. I'm going to try to start charges at just enough to get a good case seal. Thank you
