Newbee hear, just asking if some of you fellas have any load data on Alliant R 7 powder and heavier bullets? I see the burn rate of R7 is about the same as H4198, so I figure it should work but would like some personal info if anybody has used it.

Welcome Aboard Wayne!

Until someone with experience using Reloader 7 comes along, I modeled it using QuickLoad. You didn't say what platform you're using, AR or Bolt Action. According to QL, with a COL of 2.26, 44 gr of RL7 would be a safe starting point to work up from with either platform. Make sure you use a hot primer like Rem 7 1/2, WSR or CCI 450.

Thanks Hoot, I'd be using a Ruger Ranch Rifle bolt action and 300 gr. Speer deep curl bullets with the R7 powder. I've got CCI BR4 and Federal GM205M match primers. But I can pick up some hot primers.

Actually, the GM205M is a good choice as well for faster powders like Lil Gun but yeah, a hotter primer would be a better choice for R7, given its slower nature. All that advise is "in theory" since I have never used R7 in the 450b.

Update,,, the R7 powder shot good with the 300 gr Speer Deep Curl bullets. After I got the RRR 450 B sighted in with a some what lesser powder charge at 100 yards I shot a 3 shot group with a near max load, 2 shots just about through the same hole and the 3rd was about 3/4" high of the first two and that might have been shooters error. I recovered 2 bullets and they mushroomed to about an inch and held together real good, one weighed 275 grs. and the other weighed 282 grs.. Pretty happy with the results.

I love a happy ending......Good info though as I've been wondering how well RL-7 would work in a bolt action Bushmaster.

Definitely going to try RL-7 with the 300 gr XTP-MAG bullet in my Bolt action Axis BM.
