275 TSX for Black Bear

Postby cljohnson24 » Mon Jul 13, 2020 2:48 pm

Hey guys, I have H110 as well as Lil Gun, some Rem 7 1/2 Primers and ready to work up a load for my Savage Bolt gun with 18' Barrel and Brake. My 14 year old shoots it like a champ with 250 FTX factory loads and wants to use it instead of my 308 Rem Pump...
Looking for 2000 fps to keep recoil decent for him.
Which of the two powders will most likely yield the better of the 2 results at that velocity?

If you start out at 2k fps, try to keep your shots under 100 yds to insure good expansion. From what I've seen of black bear hunting, that shouldn't be tough to accomplish.

All shots are over bait and have been assured the longest shot will be 50 yards at most. I figure 1800fps impact velocity at that range and thought proper expansion was assured anywhere above 1400fps?
Hoot, what velocity would you say would be safe for complete expansion?

I have always doubted that there is an expansion difference between the XPB and TSX bullets. Looking at them, they appear to have the same meplat. The XPB is designed for handgun velocities as opposed to the TSX being designed for rifle velocities. It seems counter intuitive to me that a monolithic copper rifle bullet would expand at velocities lower than a handgun bullet. Admittedly, I've never seen a cross section of the two side by side. I do know that the XPB meplat expands wonderfully down to 1800 fps passing through sequential plastic milk jugs full of water. While water is not a precise analog for ballistic gel, it is a good indicator of behavior. I have shot the 275 XPB's through my 450b with varying muzzle velocities and there wasn't a lot of difference in recoil between top safe velocity (in an AR) and slightly less velocity. That being said, at 50 yds and in, it won't matter. Catch a bone along the way and it definitely won't matter. Just my gut feeling...

You can shoot the XPB line of bullets thru the long bbl'ed pistol caliber carbines and they perform great.
Me . . . I would/will shoot the Hornady line of XTP bullets. Especially the MAG designated line. --- SAWMAN

I thought of going with the 300 XTP Mag but decided to order the 275 Barnes' for a little less recoil and added speed.

Al, would you think the 200 XPB at it's faster speed would be better than the 275TSX?
