200gr Barnes at 300 yards

Postby Cutright » Thu Mar 04, 2021 6:00 pm

I’m sure this has been covered, but I haven’t been able to find the thread I’m looking for. I was wondering about the energy of the Barnes 200gr bullet at 300 yards in a 16” AR. In my bolt gun I use a 275 gr Barnes and have had good luck with it. We have shot deer over 200 yards with the 200gr but was wondering how far I could stretch it if I had to. My son uses one gun and I use the other so that is the reason that I am asking about the AR, since you can’t stuff as much powder in the case.

Roughly 884 ft/lb based upon a MV of 2300 and a BC of .160

That would work if it came to that. I don’t recall, did you do the water jugs at that distance? What would the energy be for the 275gr if it’s not too much trouble. Where would I be able to find this info so I don’t have to pester you?

Forgive me but it was late in the evening and I looked up 200 yds not 300 yds. At 300 yds, the energy drops to 561 ft/lbs.

Ouch! I guess I’d better move up in weight or just move closer! Thanks. If I can ever find them I’d like to try the new 250gr Barnes TTSX (?) boat tails. I had good luck with their ML bullets when I had them. My AR really likes the 275gr with 34.5gr of Lil Gun too.

I also am unable to find the Taylor Index charts on line that were referred to in Wildcatters 2012 post on long range shooting. So any help in this area would be appreciated
